Queen Bean

Location: 1126 14th St., Modesto

Reviewed: June 24, 2006

Espresso: My shot was on the long side, being at least 3oz. The crema was pale-to-medium brown and quite thin. Because of the placement of the machine, it was difficult to watch the barista at work. It was served in a typical "diner-style" coffee cup. Slightly astringent and full-bodied.

Atmosphere: Queen Bean is located inside a converted house. It is difficult to see the ordering counter from the front door. The decor consists of loud reds and overdone trappings. It tries to be elegant but fails. I suppose some people like it.

Verdict:
Questionable decor and less than stellar coffee.

I love the Queen Bean. The atmosphere especially in the patio is amazing. But I guess it's all a matter of taste.

You can please most of the people most of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.
Queen Bean Voted # 2 for Best Coffee Spot by the People/Modesto Bee. #1 was Star Bucks The Corporate Coffee Company! Queen Bean is just one, they are thousands. They voice of the people matter most!

Screw the Queen Bean! Bunch of elitist snobs who only cater to the EMO crowd. It's a wannabe Bay Area coffee house located in a one horse town. People just go there because it is better than hangin out at Starbucks, but ultimately sub par. Coffee is weak, atmosphere is way to sceney, and the staff are rude and unprofessional.
